London Team’s Efforts Lead to Exoneration of Wrongly Convicted Client

A pro bono team secures exoneration for Andrew Malkinson, after 17 years in prison.
On July 26, 2023 — after two decades of tremendous effort and persistence — our client Andrew Malkinson was fully exonerated. The case has been widely covered in the UK media.
Mr. Malkinson had been convicted in 2004 for sexual offences, received a life sentence, and eventually served 17 years in prison. Had he confessed to the crimes, he would have been eligible for parole after seven. Instead, he steadfastly maintained his innocence throughout his court cases and incarceration.
In 2018, a team of London-based lawyers led by associate Mair Williams and supervised by partner Olly Browne, began working with APPEAL, a charity dedicated to combating criminal injustices and advocating for reform, to help Mr. Malkinson overturn his conviction. A committed group of lawyers, journalists, counsel, and scientists worked for years to clear Mr. Malkinson’s name, despite countless obstacles. It took parole board applications, judicial reviews, multiple submissions to the Criminal Cases Review Commission, hearings in the Court of Appeal, DNA evidence, and incredible determination to secure this outcome.
“The exoneration of Mr. Malkinson marks one of my proudest days as a lawyer,” said Mair Williams, who has been working with Mr. Malkinson for many years. “I will never forget the feeling of seeing justice served.”
