Basil Zotiades retired from the partnership in February 2017. He is the former Co-chair of the firm's Structured Finance Practice.
His practice was evenly balanced between capital markets transactions and structured finance and derivatives. In relation to structured finance, Mr. Zotiades represented arrangers, asset managers and originators on a broad range of securitizations and asset repackagings delivered to investors in the form of debt securities, OTC derivatives, loans, fund interests or ordinary equity and involving asset classes ranging from leveraged loans, structured credit and hedge funds to commercial receivables and real estate. In relation to derivatives, his practice focused primarily on the structuring and documentation of different types of credit, equity and fund derivatives, as well as repo and stock-lending transactions.
Since 2008, Mr. Zotiades advised banks, asset managers and other financial institutions on their derivative exposures to Lehman Brothers, Madoff and hedge funds subject to restructurings; liquidity swaps and derivative transactions monetizing investment portfolios; and collective investment schemes focusing on several types of derivatives, including natural catastrophe and longevity risk products.
As part of his pro bono work, he assisted in 2009, through the Financial Services Volunteer Corps in Washington, D.C., the Albanian Financial Services Authority in preparing its new Investment Funds Law. Prior to joining Latham & Watkins, he had been a partner with Linklaters since 1996.
