Judge Jonathan Lippman Honored for Public Service Commitment

Judge Jonathan Lippman, of counsel in our New York office, was recently honored for his commitment to public service. He was named to the Law Power 100 List, an annual ranking of notables in the legal industry in the New York City area, and received the Justice Innovation Lifetime Achievement Award from the Center for Court Innovation.

City and State New York’s 2022 Law Power 100 list celebrates the “legal minds influencing New York City and state politics.” In its profile of Judge Lippman, the publication praised the judge as “a prominent leader for criminal justice reform in New York City, successfully spearheading efforts to close the jail complex on Rikers Island,” who continues to call on government officials to reduce the jail’s population. The judge was previously recognized on the publication’s 2020 Law Power 100 and 2019 Law Power 50 lists.

Center for Court Innovation is a national justice reform organization based in New York City. As part of its 25th anniversary celebration, the nonprofit honored the judge with its Justice Innovation Lifetime Achievement Award, in recognition of all he did while on the bench and during his time at Latham to create a fair, effective, and humane justice system. Judge Lippman joined Latham as of counsel in the firm’s Litigation & Trial Department in 2015, after retiring as Chief Judge of the State of New York and Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals. On the bench, he championed equal access to justice and helped make New York State the first US state to require pro bono work for admission to the bar.
