Law360 has named Latham & Watkins a 2021 Tax Group of the Year in recognition of the high-profile work handled by lawyers in both the firm’s Transactional Tax and Tax Controversy Practices. The honor by Law360 is part of the legal news publication’s annual Practice Group of the Year awards, which recognize the law firms behind litigation wins and major deals that resonated throughout the legal industry in 2021.

A feature article published by Law360 points to the firm’s tax work as a “key part of Latham’s history as a firm,” noting that founding partner Dana Latham was a former Commissioner of the IRS. It also notes that the group has seen several extraordinarily busy years, works collaboratively across practices, and continues to grow strategically in line with clients’ needs for both sophisticated transactional tax and tax controversy work.

Latham’s transactional tax lawyers are integral members of the firm’s global deals teams advising clients on market-leading transactions. The Law360 article highlighted the firm’s role advising Slack Technologies in its transformative US$27.7 billion acquisition by Salesforce, as well as Warby Parker in its direct listing on the New York Stock Exchange.

On the tax controversy side, Law360 pointed to Latham’s cutting-edge work on behalf of Netflix, obtaining dismissal of several class action lawsuits against the media streaming giant related to franchise fees – exemplifying that the group not only handles administrative matters but also tax litigation, and has a number of docketed matters.
